There is a new war brewing, and it’s once again along political lines. Stephen Johnson announced that he would not succumb to pressure from the Supreme Court’s decision that the EPA rule immediately on carbon dioxide and its affect on global warming. We have a state, Massachusetts, suing the EPA to for its ideas on the rest of us.
Even republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is getting in on the act. He wants California to have the right to make their own environmental laws concerning planes, trains, and ships. I, for one, am not in favor of federal power, but in this case it’s necessary. No matter what happens, for now, we must keep the environmental policies on a federal level. We cannot afford for continue reading » »

Free portable power
You can build in one hour
Let’s say you are on a road trip, maybe camping or staying in a mud hut in the middle of the Amazon basin.
What if your bug zapper is the only thing standing between you and biting flies the size of canned hams?
You want some source of electricity. Free electricity is even better. That’s where your portable solar electric generator comes in.

The other day I was riding home in the car listening to a variety of news channels, as is my habit, when I heard a commentator railing about some “pie in the sky” theory about sunspots causing global warming. I blinked again when several callers rang into the show to say, “next they will blame the man in the moon,” just what would you expect from people opposed to helping the environment. I thought about this all the way home and then went and checked my facts to make sure I wasn’t disturbed about a molehill.

In a previous article I talked about the problems with transporting hydrogen. Let’s take a look at Ethanol and the problems associated with its transportation. There are three ways to transport ethanol, and that’s pipelines, trains, and trucks. All three have their own problems. Lets explore each,

Fly Power
With Spring here, I always start thinking about Fly Power. This is one of my perennial articles, because it’s just such a fun idea. Who would have thought those pesky flies could be useful and entertaining?
It’s a $6 kit you buy on line. It has construction materials and instructions for making two light-weight paper airplanes, designed especially for attaching to a fly, and then the fly powers the plane. They tell you how to capture your “engine” and attach it to the plane.
The whole thing is very entertaining. This man might be a better writer than I am. (said “MIGHT” be). Click the link or picture, go and enjoy. He has fun facts about flies. Very well-done. Funny.

Below was taken from NOAA:
March 13, 2008
The average temperature across both the contiguous U.S. and the globe during climatological winter (December 2007-February 2008) was the coolest since 2001, according to scientists at NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. In terms of winter precipitation, Pacific storms, bringing heavy precipitation to large parts of the West, produced high snowpack that will provide welcome runoff this spring.
A complete analysis is available online.

That electric eel ain’t fresh, Lenny.
What? Free, fuel-less electricity from the ocean? Yes, and it produces no waste, unless you call fresh water a waste product.
No, I’m not talking about harvesting energy from the electric eel. This technology is called Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, or OTEC. If you are thinking wow, free electricity from the ocean is some cool, new idea, you’re half right. A Frenchman named Jacque Arsene D’Arsonval invented OTEC in 1881. But it is very cool.
Come on in, I’ll show you how it works. Even got some nice pictures…

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said, “The science has made it quite clear. The impact has been felt seriously around the world. Now only lacking largely is a political will,” said Ban. “As a human being, a whole international community is standing at the very critically important juncture. Whether or not we address this issue properly and collectively, the whole future of our generation and planet Earth will depend.”

Don’t dream it, be it
Sometimes when I can’t afford to actually DO something or MAKE something (i.e. most of the time), I just sort of sit down and THINK about it. The spiritual among us would call this visualizing. I call it dreaming.

We have talked about a lot of forms of alternative energy. All have pros and cons. The thing I wish to do is to provide truthful information. It’s time there is some truth presented about hydrogen. It is a wonderful substance, the building block of our universe. Without it, nothing around us would exist. We launch spacecraft with forms hydrogen because NASA, and others, gets more bang per buck for their rocket engines.
