earth hour
“Twenty-four cities around the world will fall into shadow next month as homes and businesses turn off the lights to raise awareness about global warming”, organizers said Tuesday.
Not long ago we had Live Earth, now we have Earth hour. Live Earth has been proven to be a joke and had been a huge waste of energy. I, again, watched some of Live Earth the other night and realized how cult like the people sounded as they talked about things that could be done to save the planet.
It had been proclaimed that it was fine for people to fly to all parts of the planet and to turn on those power hungry lights in an effort to bring awareness to the subject of global warming. In retrospect, that huge waste of energy was a total waste.
Now we have Earth Hour where for twenty-four cities are going to turn out the lights for an hour. This follows Sydney Australia’s hour of darkness last year. They claim to have reduced the city’s electrical consumption by 10.1%.
You would think if every city turned off the lights for an hour periodically that would save the planet. That assumption would be so wrong. While for an hour everyone is saving electricity. Lets look at what happens on the other end, the power generating station. When they turn off the lights a generator at the station might go idle, but mostly likely it will go offline.
You will hear, “This is only to bring awareness to global warming.”
Things are going great so far. We are producing fewer emissions at the power plant. The hour is up, time to turn on the lights, television, etc. Now this generator restarts. Does the station and its generators have to return to the level of output before Earth Hour? No, it has to go beyond that. There is a huge surge that makes the power station rush to its maximum output.
I am sure this is confusing, but it’s pretty simple. A generating station is most efficient when it is running steady with few ups and downs. The times when generating facilities have problems are during extremes in temperatures and planet saving Earth Hours.
The only way to have a worthwhile affect is to have rotating brown outs during the day. Life would be much the same as it was for Californians during its failed deregulation plan. If the global warming alarmist gets their way we will have brown outs no matter what, at least for those with lower incomes since the new sources of clean energy are far more expensive.
You will hear, “This is only to bring awareness to global warming.” If you really believe in manmade global warming, then why make is worse with large carbon footprint exercises? Everything is about making smart decisions…and this isn’t one of them. This is just another “feel good” solution.

To paraphrase Tom Cruise in Top Gun — “I’ve got the urge, the urge to surge.”
You are correct about the surge that happens when people come back on line after their useless demonstration that they care about the planet.
You hit it right on the head when you said it’s about making smart decisions. Unfortunately, so many of them aren’t informed enough to make a smart decision. They just bought into the emotional frenzy of global climate change, a la The Inconvenient One.
Global Climate Change is nothing more than a religion as it stands now. I always have the same advice for these eco-caring people. “Don’t curse the dark, light a candle.” At least that way they can be DO-gooders instead of FEEL-gooders.

Even though I hole heartedly agree it would be like in my home I can not get the kids to turn anthing off (TV,HALL LIGHT. DRYER,) get my message open dors and so on. But IF ONLY!!!!!!

Its hard for even adults to remember to turn off lights. Timers and motion detectors are good options for turning off lights, but honestly, lights are only a small fraction of the energy used in our homes.

Yes! BUT I am still a psstimist and I think it would take a gun to the head to get some eyes opened.

Today in Florida there was a massive blackout. There was a failure somewhere on the system and as the load dropped dramatically the turbines began to over speed. There are safety devices to prevent this. If allowed to continue the turbines would eventually spin so fast that the blades disintegrate.
This safety caused 5 nuclear reactors to SCRAM, as well as 2 oil fired plants to shut down. The same thing could happen on Earth Hour, but to a lesser degree.
